We Knew What Was Coming

We knew what was / Coming—the outburst / Of green

Black and white photo of poet Matt Rader superimposed on an orange background.

We knew what was
Coming—the outburst
Of green,

The fanfare of needles
And leaves,
And always, eventually,

The copper and auburn,
The russet and ochre

Reckoning windswept
And eddied
In our doorstep,

Like confusion blown clear,
Finally but not
Forever, of its origins.
