Update to Apple subscriptions
Effective February 20, we will no longer be offering iPad and iPhone subscriptions in our iTunes app to new subscribers. New digital subscriptions will still be available to Android users via the Google Play store, Nook, and Pressreader.
Current Apple digital subscribers will still be able to download new issues from our app until we terminate the service in spring/summer of 2019 and will then be able to receive new issues through a new magazine subscription service from Apple. If you are a subscriber to our iPad or iPhone app and are missing issues, please click the “Missing issues? ” button for iPad or “Issues gone? ” button for iPhone or iPod touch located in the “Library” tab to restore any issues that were not automatically delivered.
If you lose access to back issues you have already purchased: When you upgrade your device’s operating system, or if the device runs low on memory, there’s a chance it will wipe the memory cache that stores in-app downloads. To rectify the problem, open The Walrus magazine app’s Library interface, then tap the Missing Issues button. Sign in using the same Apple account that you used to activate your subscription. You will not have to pay again. If a different account is entered, this restoration process will fail.
If the Missing Issues button fails or if you did not receive the most recent issue: If you are a subscriber, each new issue should automatically download to your device and appear in your in-app Library. Sometimes a communication error prevents this from happening. In these cases, you may have to download the issue manually by tapping the Download button next to its cover graphic. The same process applies if you have turned off automatic downloads or would like to re-download an archived issue.
If the issue is only available in your Store and not in your Library, do not purchase it again—you will be charged. (Per Apple’s terms and conditions, we cannot issue refunds directly to customers.)
Per Apple’s terms and conditions, all purchases are considered final; developers are not permitted to refund customers. We do not have access to your App Store transaction record or any credit card information used for your purchase.
Your subscription will automatically continue, and your credit card will be charged for another subscription period at the current price, unless auto-renewal is turned off at least twenty-four hours before the end of the active period. However, you can manage your subscription and deactivate auto-renewal by accessing your App Store account settings after purchase. Subscriptions cannot be cancelled during the active subscription period.
To ensure that your subscription does not auto-renew at the end of the term, open the App Store on your device, scroll to the bottom of the page, tap your Apple ID button and login to your Apple account. Tap the manage button under the Subscriptions header, then tap The Walrus magazine and you’ll see an option to deactivate auto-renew for your subscription.
The App Is Crashing
First, try restarting your device and then relaunching the app. If the problem persists, check your device’s operating system by accessing its Settings app. Click through General, then About and check your version number. There is a known error with our app and iOS version 5.0.1. If you are running this version, please upgrade to version 5.1 (or higher) and relaunch our app. At this point, you may have to tap the Missing Issues button to restore your purchases.
Using Additional iOS Devices
You can access the same subscription on up to five iOS devices, provided you are signed into the same Apple account that originally purchased the subscription. Just download The Walrus magazine app to your extra device(s), then hit the Missing Issues button in the app’s Library. Finally, sign in to the Apple account that you used to purchase the subscription or issues. Login with your corresponding Apple ID, and you will be able to access your subscription on the new device.
Prompts to Re-Purchase the App
This will happen if you have signed in to a different Apple account than the one you used to download the app. If you need to switch accounts, quit out of the app entirely, then open the App Store and scroll to the bottom of its home screen. There, you will see your device’s active Apple ID. Sign out and back in to switch accounts, then return to the app and attempt your purchase again—or tap the Missing Issues button to restore previous purchases.
Accessing the Latest Issue
Make sure you have the current version of the The Walrus magazine app by checking for updates in your App Store. When you purchase either a subscription or a single issue, the newest magazine should appear in your Library. To access it, tap your screen to pull up the app’s menu bar, then tap the Library button. There, you should see the issue’s cover accompanied by a Download button. Once the issue has been downloaded, you can tap the green Read button to open it. (If you’re seeing prices instead of Read buttons, you’re in the Store, not the Library.)
